I just did a major revision of my desktop, etc., and it's been so long that I forgot what I did last time... I want to change the color of the frame, the thing that includes the gripper. It's gray (or html "silver"), and I want it to be a darker, muted color. How do I do that? --or is my memory of having done it a year ago a fiction? I mean, can the frame's color be changed?

The short answer is: because Microsoft doesn't do things fast enough, or well enough, to suit people who want to _enjoy_ using their computers. (I don't use Outlook Express anymore, so I can't say if or when M$ fixed the bug that put a "~" file on my desktop at strange intervals; the file was part of the Address Book, it was a well-known bug, and M$ couldn't take the trouble to fix it. Then, Task Scheduler typically would not let a user delete part of its log file, and that may still be true. And Task Scheduler had a security problem that no M$ people even admitted to, for years. And...)

yes, i did the uninstall/delete the files thing.
one thing i noticed: it ONLY happens if i use the scrollwheel. if i just down-arrow or press the first letter to move down the list, no problem.

is there a way to migrate my buttons and categories over?
the thought of having to redo ALL those buttons from scratch is making me faint.
what about transferring from LM back to the desktop? can that be done?

okay, i figured it out: first off, looks like LM4 doesn't actually "install" -- suh-WEET!
loads much faster with a cleaner feel to it.
now, about them icons (for those that don't know):
first, backup your icons into a launchmate LMB file.
copy your existing launchmate files into another folder -- call it Laundhmate 4 so it'll be right next to the existing Launchmate folder. unzip the LM4 files into that same folder, say yes to any overwrite warnings.
shut off launchmate.
through add/remove programs, uninstall launchmate.
through windows explorer, double-click LNCHMATE.EXE to start it. the bar will be blank.
look in the folder: there should be another folder called "profiles". if there isn't, right-click the toolbar, click "profiles", click "add", nothing will happen, click "ok" and get out. now there should be the profiles folder.
copy the backup you made earlier into the profiles folder.
in the profiles folder, you should see two files, DEFAULT.LMP and DEFAULT.LMD.
delete DEFAULT.LMD, rename the LMB file to DEFAULT.LMD
restart launchmate and bob's yer uncle.
ps: if this didn't work for you, i can't help since i only figured that out through trial and error.

why is it always ppl complaining about upgrades not happening as quickly as they wish and never ppl saying "i can help you with that"?
things would move along a lot faster if there was less kvetching and more fetching.

hello -- i'm totally in love with launchmate (you can't begin to believe the number of shortcuts that were on my desktop, and those were just the ones i use regularly!).
however, ever since i installed it, my computer (which is normally 100% reliable) can't run more than a couple of hours before things go to heck in a handcart:
buttons are flat grey with no text
drop-down lists don't populate
trillian chat windows get all pixelated and freaky
eudora gives me a "required resource missing" error that just keeps going and going until i kill it with ATM
eudora icons all turn black until i close one or more other windows
flash menus don't show up
Resource meter shows resources on all three front plummeting to 10% or lower
any idea what's happening here?
system info:
win98 (all critical patches and updates)
IE 6 (latest updates and patches)
384 RAM
PIII-600E
